Pied Piper Award 2011

Pied Piper Form 2011
Deadline: December 3, 2010

Pied Piper Award Winner for 2010

Congratulations to Amy Joslyn, from the Fairport Public Library, and Jennifer Preisser, from the Greece Public Library, the 2010 Pied Piper Award winners for their Read to Me bags.

There are many prepackaged book kits on the market, but usually they are created to meet a specific educational need or address a specific skill. These bags were created simply for the convenience of busy parents who do not have the time or energy to spend time selecting materials for their young child. They can just grab this bag and go.

Both the Fairport and Greece libraries have a large population of children in their infant and toddler lapsit programs. Between carrying or watching after an infant and bringing along a diaper bag and/or other miscellaneous items, it is very difficult for parents and caregivers to select items either before or after story times. With several parents saying that they would come back and select books at a time when they could browse the collection, it was decided that pre-assembled bags were the best way to help these parents and caregivers be able to conveniently check out library materials.

Each bag includes two board books, a music CD, and a finger puppet. They also include an informational sheet with tips for reading aloud with baby, a booklist of recommended titles for babies, the ALA publication “Every Child Ready to Read” and the PLA publication “Nursery Rhymes, Songs and Fingerplays.” It has been popular even among those who are not a part of the baby story time. Reports have been very positive from the parents about the ease of selection and use at home. The informational materials included are available from PLA.
