The YOUTH SERVICES SECTION is the singular section of the New York Library Association that promotes quality library service for young people from birth through high school. Our members specialize in meeting the unique needs of youth, parents and educators in public and school libraries.

2009 Spring Conference

The Youth Services Section of the New York Library Association announces its 2009 Spring Conference on Friday, April 3, 2009, at The Inn on the Lake in Canandaigua, NY.  The keynote speaker will be author Linda Sue Park, whose novel, A Single Shard, was the winner of the 2002 Newbery Award.  "A Kaleidoscope of Ideas" is the theme of this day-long conference, which will include a choice of twelve workshops for librarians specializing in services for children and teens.  Topics will include early literacy, using technology with teens, programming on a budget, library web pages for youth, developing collections and programs for gamers, and designing hands-on graphic novel workshops for teens.  Edgar-Award winning author of Never Trust a Dead Man, Vivian Vande Velde, will provide the luncheon speech.

Registration

Registration includes a continental breakfast and luncheon.  Early bird rates apply until February 28, 2009.  Reduced registration fees will be offered for library school students and New York Library Association members in the Youth Services and School Library Media Sections.  The Youth Services Section is pleased to be partnering with the 4th Annual Grater Rochester Teen Book Festival which will be held in Rochester on Saturday, April 4.  This free event for teens will allow youth services specialists the fortuitous opportunity to hear some outstanding young adult authors the day after the YSS Spring Conference.

Gather with friends and colleagues in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of New York State to examine the constantly changing field of youth services.  For further information, please contact Conference Chair Liz O'Toole at lotoole@pls-net.org .

Speakers

The YSS Conference is pleased to feature two award-winning authors who reside in the Rochester area:

Linda Sue Park (Keynote)
Linda Sue Park
Keynote speaker Linda Sue Park is the Newbery Award winning author of A Single Shard.  The daughter of Korean immigrants, Linda Sue grew up outside Chicago and has been writing poems and stories since she was four years old. After Seesaw Girl was published in 1999, Linda was especially excited that her second book, The Kite Fighters, released in 2000, had chapter-heading illustrations created by her father.  She received the Newbery in 2002 and has since published several additional novels, picture books, and short story collections.  Linda Sue lives in Rochester with her husband and their two children.

Vivian Vande Velde(Lunch)
Vivian Vande VeldeOur distinguished luncheon speaker, Vivian Vande Velde, has a penchant for novels and short stories that usually have some element of horror or fantasy, but show off her abundant good humor!  She received the Edgar® Award for Never Trust a Dead Man in 2000.  Whether it is twisted fairy tales, dragons as best friends, time travel, vampires, or curses, Vivian has something for everyone.  Being Dead was selected as a Best Book for Young Adults in 2001 and Tales from the Brothers Grimm and the Sisters Weird was a "Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers."  Many of Vivian's books are set "long ago and far away" because that's the kind of story she's always liked best.
